Diego García-Sayán is a Peruvian politician, public intellectual and lawyer. He has served as judge on the Inter-American Court of Human Rights since 2004. In 2009, he was elected by his peers to serve as the Court’s President for the 2010-12 period. García Sayán co-founded the Peruvian Center for International Studies (CEPEI) in 1980, and served during many years the Chairperson of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. In the Peruvian government he has served as a member of Congress (2000), and he held the positions of Minister of Justice (2000–2001) during Peru’s transitional government, and of Minister of Foreign Affairs (2001–2002) under the Alejandro Toledo administration. In his spare time, Mr. García-Sayán is a percussionist and motorcycle enthusiast.
