Critical Race Theory (CRT) celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2009. As CRT continues to engage contemporary legal and social issues, its challenge continues to be finding new and dynamic applications. The Hamline University School of Law (HUSL) Journal of Public Law & Policy‘s March 12, 2010 Symposium — Opening Our Eyes to Health Disparities: A Look Through the Lens of Critical Race Theory — did just that.

Studies Reading Group, the March 12 Symposium brought nationally-renowned scholars and policy makers together with local practitioners and private healthcare providers for a community discussion on how CRT can be used to engage the social, legal and political realities enmeshed in health law and policy. The Symposium addressed racial and cultural disparities in health outcomes, determinants, and access to healthcare. The Journals goal is now to promote exceptional and novel scholarship fostering awareness and dialogue within and beyond the legal community on the intersection CRT and health policy.Participants included keynote addresses from Camille Nelson and Lisa Ikemoto, both leaders in the intersection of CRT and health care law, public health law health policy and bioethics. Speakers also included distinguished physician and historian Dr. Vanessa Northington Gamble, Chair of the Office of Minority Healths Advisory Committee on Minority Health Dr. Rubens Pamies, and several other renowned members of the CRT and health law communities. The Journal of Public Law & Policy is dedicating its Fall 2010 issue to the Symposium. The Journal invites additional submissions for papers to be published in its Fall 2010 issue. Papers can address application of CRT generally, but preference will be given to papers that address the application of CRT to health law, healthcare determinants, healthcare policy, bioethics and/or access to healthcare. Articles need not originate at the conference.
Deadline for manuscript submissions: June 30, 2010.
Papers should be no more than 8000 words, not including notes, and accompanied by an abstract of no more than 200 words as well as author C.V.s/resumes. Bluebook formatting is preferred, but the Journals editorial staff is willing to work with authors outside of the legal field to put manuscripts into proper Bluebook format.
