Call for Papers Deadline: Ethical Issues of Chronic Diseases

The Editors of Bioethics are pleased to announce a special issue in 2012 on ethical issues of chronic diseases, with guest editors Ross Upshur and Jennifer Gibson, Joint Centre for Bioethics University of Toronto. The submission deadline is Feb. 1, 2011. We invite submissions on all aspects of this topic. Issues of special consideration include but are not limited to:

• Is there a morally relevant distinction between infectious and chronic diseases?
• What are the moral obligations of governments, funding agencies and other sectors to establish policies responding to chronic diseases?
• Global disparities in health system response to chronic diseases
• Ethical considerations in end of life, palliative care and advance care planning for non-cancer chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
• Ethical considerations in the care of chronic mental health disorders, particularly those that impair cognition such as dementia
• Priority setting considerations for health systems in terms of balancing commitments to prevention, community, primary care, acute care and long term care
• Ethical issues associated with demographic transition and the rise of multi-morbidity
• Ethical issues of pediatric patients transitioning into adulthood with chronic disease burdens
• Ethical issues associated with care givers
• Ethical issues associated with patient empowerment
• Ethical issues associated with rehabilitation populations
