The Searle Civil Justice Institute (SCJI) at George Mason University School of Law is seeking proposals for empirical research projects that will result in publishable-quality and policy-relevant reports. The SCJI will select proposals in a three-stage process.

Initial Preliminary Statements of Research Proposals, not to exceed one page, must be received by March 15, 2012, to receive full consideration for the 2012-13 funding cycle. SCJI will request a full proposal from selected authors by April 15, 2012. The 2011 SCJI Empirical Research Workshop will take place in June 2012.

SCJI will fully support certain accepted proposals by paying author(s) to lead the research efforts, providing in-house econometricians and legal experts as project staff, paying for necessary data (which includes employing large numbers of research assistants to find and code data that might otherwise by unavailable), and funding a comprehensive communications strategy for the final Public Policy Report.

The UALR Law Review is calling for the submission of articles for its upcoming Ben J. Altheimer Paper Symposium, eConflicts Resolved: Evaluations of Legal Solutions to Information-Age Conflicts, which is scheduled for publication in May 2012. The deadline is Jan. 31, 2012. The editors request interested authors let them know of their intent to submit.

As the working title suggests, submissions should examine the various legal regimes – past, present, or proposed – used to resolve conflicts arising through online interactions between individuals, corporations, and governments. Although certainly not an exhaustive list, articles might address one of the following issues:

Have traditional legal regimes adequately adapted to Internet-specific conflicts?

Have we made strides in resolving jurisdictional and conflicts-of-law problems that arise from online interactions in multistate and multinational scenarios?

Has the common law effectively adapted to address the unique characteristics of online disputes?

Have legislatures taken the proper steps to effectively adapt legal standards to the Internet or online settings?

How can the application of existing laws be improved in light of the proliferation of Internet transactions and actions?

We ask that interested authors give advance notice of intent to submit. The deadline for submission is Jan. 31. Please direct questions, notices of intent to submit, and submissions to Caleb J. Norris, Symposium Editor (cjnorris at ualr.edu).

The International Journal of Transitional Justice (IJTJ) invites submissions for its 2012 special issue, Transitional Justice and the Everyday: Micro-Perspectives of Justice and Social Repair, guest edited by Pilar Riaño Alcalá (Associate Professor, School of Social Work and Liu Institute for Global Studies, University of British Columbia) and Erin Baines (Assistant Professor, Liu Institute for Global Issues, University of British Columbia). The submissions deadline is April 1, 2012.

In this special issue, the IJTJ will consider how people seek and experience justice after mass atrocity in the context of everyday life. Specific questions to be addressed will include:

How do communities repair social relationships and networks that violence so often tears apart?

Through what informal micro-processes and performances do people make sense of and address violent pasts, seek acknowledgement, accountability and justice?

How do individuals or communities encounter and respond to formal national mechanisms such as truth commissions and trials or efforts to demobilize and reintegrate combatants?

How do individuals and communities respond to state-generated histories of the past? How do they generate their own narratives about the past?

How are local meanings of justice and social repair given expression in informal and formal TJ mechanisms?

Further areas may include:

The meaning of justice and social repair in the context of the everyday

Rebuilding lives, social networks and relationships

Indigenous processes and mechanisms for healing, reconciliation and justice

Ceremonial, ritual and spiritual processes of reconciliation

Performance and artistic expressions

Local initiatives of storytelling, memory making and truth telling

Relationships and tensions between informal and formal processes at the local level

Formal/state engagement and its impact at community level

IJTJ encourages the submission of papers from a broad spectrum of disciplines: philosophy, literary studies, political science, theatre, Indigenous studies, race and gender studies, post-colonial studies, sociology, anthropology, psychology, criminology, law, memory studies, among others.

The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2012. Papers should be submitted online from the IJTJ webpage

This workshop will investigate the role and limits of law in resolving land disputes in greater China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) and Vietnam. Speakers will examine how courts (and other dispute resolution fora) use law and/or other regulatory sources to resolve disputes about ownership and access to land. Land taking cases will be investigated from the perspective of conflicting understandings about land ownership and tenure rights. More particularly some of the speakers will investigate to what extent dispute resolution fora draw on guidance from outside the juridical framework to resolve disputes.
