The 8th ASLI (Asian Law Institute) Conference, Law in a Sustainable Asia, will be hosted by the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University (Kyushu, Fukuoka, Japan) May 26-27, 2011.
Within the broad conference theme of “Law in a Sustainable Asia”, five of the parallel sessions will focus on selected sub-themes: (1) general perspectives on sustainability (studying aspects such as sustainable development, environmental justice, green development, or conservation ethics); (2) the economic dimension of sustainability (exploring, among other issues, corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability, sustainable finance, economic opportunity or transnational commons); (3) the environmental dimension of sustainability (examining pollution control, climate change, food security, natural resource management, bio-diversity etc); (4) the participatory dimension of sustainability (looking at community partnership, civil society participation, stakeholder participation, community participation and the like); (5) the social dimension of sustainability (examining issues such as peace, security and social justice, livable cities, cultural heritage and diversity, law and development, social capital or planning and land use).
The organizers invite proposals for papers, panels, and poster sessions. The deadline for submitting abstracts is Jan. 7, 2011.

The University of Washington School of Law presents Mobile Payments: Global Markets, Empowered Consumers and New Rules? Oct. 29, 2010.
More than two-thirds of the world’s population has a mobile phone, creating opportunities for new payment platforms in both developed and developing nations. In the former, where the market for mobile telephony is mature, mobile payments are seen as a potential source of revenue by mobile operators, who are trying to diversify their services. In the latter, mobile payments could transition the unbanked into mainstream financial services, and could create new opportunities for commerce as mobile devices can make transactions more efficient and provide merchants and consumers with new access to information.This one-day conference will explore the benefits of mobile payments in to consumers – both in developed and developing markets and the types of regulatory approaches that will increase consumer adoption and provide incentives for businesses to compete in this emerging space.

The University of Basel in Switzerland and the University of Buea in Cameroon, with the support of UNCITRAL (United Nation Commission on International Trade Law) and OHADA (Organisation for the Harmonised Business Law in Africa) are organising an international conference entitled “The 1st African Conference on International Commercial Law.” The Conference will be held in Douala, Cameroon, Jan. 13-14, 2011. The Conference will focus on topics related to international sales law, international arbitration and unification of general contract law.
During this conference early career researchers also have the opportunity to present recent research papers relating to the topics of the conference. Early career researchers interested in submitting abstracts are invited to do so before Oct. 1, 2010. The abstract should be submitted as a word or pdf document with 12-point font, 1.5 line spacing and should not exceed 1500 words. The abstract should be sent via email to Jeanalain.Penda [at] unibas.ch. A jury of established academics will select the successful eight abstracts. The researchers of the selected abstracts will be given 10 minutes to present their papers during the “Early Career Researchers Panel.” The travel and accommodation expenses of the selected candidates will be covered.

Early Career Researchers are people who are within two years of the start of their research careers when submitting their abstract. They should be currently undertaking a dissertation, Ph.D. thesis or the like, or have received a doctoral degree not earlier than 2008.

The William Mitchell Law Review is proud to dedicate the fourth issue in its upcoming Volume 37 (Spring 2011) to E-Commerce Law. We are currently seeking papers that examine current issues or recent developments in this area of law. Submissions may either take the form of shorter commentaries or longer law review articles. The deadline for submissions has been set for December 1, 2010.
The William Mitchell Law Review is highly regarded both regionally and nationally. Our Law Review recently ranked twenty-second in citations by judges and ranked fifty-seventh in citations by other law journals. Over the years, the William Mitchell Law Review has featured the works of various local scholars and practitioners such as Congressman Tim Penny and former Vice President Walter Mondale. Bocconi University, Tilburg University, and NYU present the 5th International Conference on Financial Regulation and Supervision (“Finlawmetrics”), June 24-25, 2010 in Milan. Rutgers School of Law – Newark, Women’s Rights Law Reporter would like to introduce the topic of our Fall 2009 Symposium, occurring on Friday, November 13, 2009: Women In Economics, Where are We Today?
This symposium is focused on the recent downturn in our economy, and how our latest economic crisis has had an effect on women. We invite discussion on topics such as: women in the workplace today; women’s positions in our economic sphere as it stands today and, possibly, as compared with ten years ago; women’s ability to obtain loans for either small businesses, homes, or the like; the bailout and its effect on women; all current legal issues associated with women and economics, and finally, differing feminist perspectives on where the women of today are headed in the future in terms of this economy. This is a fairly broad topic, but our main concern to answer the question of where this recent economic crisis has left women today, and the legal battles that they may be facing in the future.
We invite proposals for articles, essays and book reviews in conjunction with this symposium topic, however, such proposals are not required for participation in this event. Also, publication of any article, essay or book review is subject to the quality of the piece, and is within the sole discretion of our editors.
We welcome brief submissions of 250 words or less as to what issues you would be able to speak on concerning our Fall 2009 Symposium. The Commonwealth Regional Law Conference 2010 will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, April 8-11.
This conference is the first CLA regional meeting and follows a decision taken by the Council in 2008 to organise an event to focus on a specific region in the year in which no Commonwealth Law Conference is due to take place. The theme of the conference is ‘The 21st Century Lawyer: Present Challenges & Future Skills’ and the two programme streams will focus on ‘Human Rights & the Rule of Law’ and ‘Corporate & Commercial Law’ with an emphasis on issues of importance within the host country and wider region. The sessions will offer practical training which will provide and further develop the legal skills of those attending, in addition to providing the usual networking opportunities and exciting social programme. It is anticipated that the regional conference will primarily be attended by lawyers from the host jurisdiction and the immediate neighbouring countries.

The International Association of IT Lawyers (IAITL) invites submission of the papers for presentation at the Third International Conference on International Law and Trade, to be held in Sliema, Malta on November 3-5, 2009. The Conference provides an opportunity for academics, practitioners and consultants from different backgrounds to dialogue on important issues relating to international law, trade, commerce, and information technology.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) invite submissions for the NUS Law School-AsianSIL Conference on Sovereign Wealth Funds: Governance and Regulation, to be held at the NUS Law School in Singapore on September 9-11, 2009.
All conference papers will be published as “working papers” on the AsianSIL website. A select number of accepted papers will subsequently be considered for formal publication in a special section of the Singapore Year Book of International Law. Paper-givers who are selected through a competitive process will have their reasonable expenses covered.
Completed proposals must be submitted Friday, 24 April 2009. Those selected to participate in the conference will be notified by Friday, 1 May 2009.
