Submissions and nominations of articles are now being accepted for the third annual Fred C. Zacharias Memorial Prize for Scholarship in Professional Responsibility. To honor Fred’s memory, the committee will select from among articles in the field of Professional Responsibility with a publication date of 2012. The prize will be awarded at the 2013 AALS Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Please send submissions and nominations to Professor Samuel Levine

Legal Fiction Contest

The Journal of Legal Education (a publication of the Association of American Law Schools) and Southwestern Law School have announced the first JLE Legal Fiction Contest. Submissions must be original short works of fiction related to law school or the practice of law, and winning entries will be published in a future issue of the Journal of Legal Education. The submission deadline is March 15, 2012. mw

The 7th Joint Study Institute (JSI) will be held at Melbourne Law School from Wednesday evening, February 13 to Saturday, February 16, 2013.

Joint Study Institutes are hosted by the

American Association of Law Libraries (AALL)
Australian Law Librarians Association (ALLA)
British & Irish Association of Law Libraries (BIALL)
Canadian Association of Law Libraries/Association Canadienne des Bibliotheques de Droit (CALL/ACBD)
New Zealand Law Librarians’ Association (NZLLA).

JSI programs provide unique opportunities to network and learn about the law, legal research and topical issues of the host jurisdiction that are of interest to law librarians and the legal profession. The last JSI held in Australia was held in Sydney in 2004. For information about past Joint Study Institute programs, see this page.

The University of St. Thomas Law Journal held its fall symposium, The Lawyer’s Role and Professional Formation, today, Sept. 23, 2011.

At a time of wrenching change in the legal profession, there is a pressing need to step back and ask foundational questions about the nature of the lawyer’s role in society and how that role should shape the way we educate and form lawyers. The symposium gathers many of the leading scholars who are working to help clarify our understanding of the lawyer’s work and to chart the future course of legal education. Often the more theoretical conversations about the nature of the lawyer’s role proceed separately from the more practical conversations about the future course of legal education. This symposium brings both conversations together in what promises to be an energized and productive new dialogue. This is a Medtronic Business and Law Roundtable and a Law Journal Symposium cosponsored by the Holloran Center.

Gender and the Legal Profession’s Pipeline to Power – Detroit, MI

The Michigan State Law Review will hold a symposium titled “Gender and the Legal Profession’s Pipeline to Power” on Thursday and Friday, April 12 and 13, 2012.

The symposium will serve as a catalyst to raise awareness about, discuss the dynamics of, and strategize solutions to the persistent gender disparity that exists in positions of power in the legal profession. Scholars and experts from the fields of law, political science, journalism, and beyond will reframe and advance the course of existing dialogue on gender equality.

The call for papers deadline is Nov. 15, 2011. mw
