The Mid-Atlantic Journal on Law and Public Policy is a new, region-focused journal. The Journal will publish two editions annually and welcomes article submissions for its first animal law edition to be published on July 1, 2012.

The Journal will have Westlaw and LexisNexis citations. Articles for the animal law edition should generally discuss the intersection of animals and current law and policy concerns. Submissions, which should provide a comparative exploration of as many states in the mid-Atlantic region as possible, will be considered for potential publication.

Abstracts were originally due by March 1, 2012, but the editors are still accepting submissions. The Journal will publish twice a year, so submissions for future issues are also welcome.

Completed articles will be due by April 1, 2012. Alternatively, if you have a completed article, you may submit it along with an abstract summarizing the article to us. Priority consideration will be given to completed articles. To submit your application consisting of your abstract and/or article, resume and cover letter, or to pose any questions you may have, please contact the Journal staff at MidAtlanticJournal [at] Gmail.com.

The Law Society research conference, Shaping Policy, Changing Law, will take place Oct. 12, 2012. The organizers invite papers from academics on the relationship between academic research and policy development and law reform. The deadline for abstracts is March 9, 2012.

LJ Jackson’s review of civil costs and the ensuing legislative process to enact his recommendations highlights the importance of, and necessity for, academics and their research in the development of policy and law reform. The requirement in the 2014 REF exercise to demonstrate the impact of research provides a strong impetus for the relationship between research and law reform and policy to be explored and invigorated.

This conference aims to provide a unique opportunity to do that by bringing together academics, parliamentarians, civil servants, judges and other users of research.

Contributions are invited primarily from academics in the field of law – including doctrinal and theoretical research as well as socio-legal approaches – but also in political science, sociology and economics. In particular we welcome research papers which:

identify needs for reform

have contributed to law reform processes in the last 5 years or are likely to in the near future

have influenced the development of precedent or other judicial decision making

capture impacts of law reform

have improved, or are intended to improve, the depth and quality of policy debate and legal argument

capture how law making has changed or is changing.

Suggested topics/themes for parallel workshop sessions include:

(Legal) Business Environment – e.g. EU and domestic laws regulating business transactions (EU contract law, AML), regulation of entities, cyberlaw

Rights of the individual (and opposing rights)/legal person environment – e.g employment, family justice, human rights/civil liberties, access to justice, medico-legal, migration

Criminal Justice – e.g. sentencing, victim perspectives, juries

Rule of Law/Public Law

International perspectives on law reform

(***examples are provided as a guide and are not intended to be exclusive)

T: 020 7242 1222 f: 020 7831 0344 www.lawsociety.org.uk

We invite submissions of abstracts for 20 minute papers on any aspect of law reform (broadly defined as the process of examining existing laws and advocating and implementing changes in a legal system but also including work which contributes to government legislative programmes and Bill processes, and judicial decision making).

Submission details:
Please email a Microsoft Word document containing your contact details, institution and position, along with a 700 word abstract to tara.chittenden@lawsociety.org.uk and nina.fletcher@lawsociety.org.uk and indicating the workshop subject stream the paper is most suited for.
Deadline for abstracts: 9 March 2012
Word limit: 700 words
Notification: 6 April 2012
Full manuscript: chosen authors are required to submit the full manuscript by September 14, 2012.

DEADLINE: All proposals must be received no later than March 1, 2011.

The Dirksen Congressional Center invites applications for grants to fund
research on congressional leadership and the U.S. Congress. A total of up to $35,000 will be available in 2011. Awards range from a few hundred dollars to $3,500. Stipends will be awarded to individuals (not organizations) on a competitive basis. Grants will normally extend for one year. In some circumstances, the Center will make more than one award to a single individual in consecutive years, but not more than three awards to the same person in a five-year period.

The competition is open to individuals with a serious interest in studying
Congress. Political scientists, historians, biographers, scholars of public
administration or American studies, and journalists are among those eligible.
The Center encourages graduate students who have successfully defended their dissertation prospectus to apply and awards a significant portion of the funds for dissertation research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens who reside in the United States.
