Dear Readers,

Some changes at WordPress led to some changes in our site this week.

For now, the calendar isn’t working. You can still navigate to, say, April 2012, but you don’t see any of the posts. And we aren’t able to add anything new to the calendar.

The search box that used to be below the calendar is gone.

If you miss these features, here is a kluge: use Google to search the Legal Scholarship Blog. In a Google search box, type your search and add site:legalscholarshipblog.com. For example:

“searle center” site:legalscholarshipblog.com

“los angeles” empirical site:legalscholarshipblog.com

You can even use this to make up for the loss of the calendar. For example:

deadline march 2012 site:legalscholarshipblog.com

conference july 2012 site:legalscholarshipblog.com

We’re working on improving the site.

In the meantime, we’re always interested in your feedback. Is the calendar a feature that you use? Do you miss it?

mw

We at the Legal Scholarship Blog routinely look for information about conferences. When we are sent information to post, we try to link to the sponsoring organization’s website and give you ways to find more information.

While trying to track down information related to one conference notice, I found a warning that some email invitations to conferences (including the one I had in front of me) are scams from made-up organizations. The notice is from the Union of International Associations (a legitimate organization listed in UNESCO‘s database of NGOs).

An increasing number of email scams are using NGOs, International NGOs, development agencies, meetings, international conferences etc as the hook to defraud or cheat unsuspecting recipients.Always use caution when responding to or acting on unsolicited bulk email or paper mail.

The Union of International Associations is monitoring these fraudulent announcements and has a list posted on its site. Many of the organizations and conference titles—climate change, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and so on—sound very good, but the notices are fraudulent nonetheless. Read email critically. mw

The good news is that there is a lot going on in the legal academy. The bad news is that this site can be overwhelming to busy academics who just want to find what’s relevant to them.

One answer? Use our categories.

When we post events and calls for papers, we tag them with one or more of the categories listed in the sidebar. That means that when you visit the site, you can look for just the events in certain subject areas, whether Business Law, Human Rights Law, or Law and Gender. Or you can look just at the listings of Colloquia/Workshops or just Calls for Papers.

If you use a feed reader (also known as RSS reader or aggregator), you can subscribe to the feed for selected categories. Our tech team set this up in response to a professor’s suggestion — he liked the site but found it overwhelming to get announcements about conferences that weren’t in his area. Now he can follow his topics (environmental law and administrative law) and you can follow yours, whatever they are.
