That symposium will be published in the 107th volume of the journal. We encourage interested parties to submit symposium topics beginning on January 1, 2011.
If you would like to submit a topic for our consideration, please prepare a proposal of no more than five pages, outlining the following information:
* Topic
* Why the topic is timely
* Why the topic is important
* How the topic advances legal scholarship
* Proposed list of participants
* Proposed panels (topic and the list of participants for each panel)
* Possible funding
* Any additional information that might help us in evaluating your proposal
You should submit your proposal to Lindsay Dunbar (l-dunbar2012 [at] nlaw.northwestern.edu), the Review’s Special Sections Editor. Feel free to contact Lindsay should you have any questions about the proposal. To allow for ample time to secure symposium participants, we plan to select the topic by May 2011.
We are looking forward to working with you on selecting the most engaging topic for our 2011–2012 symposium.

The West Virginia Law Review seeks papers on the topic of non‐violence as a means of social change and pathway to democracy for former dictatorships or totalitarian regimes for its special issue, Non-Violence and the Road to Democracy.
Recently, Egypt joined the ranks of countries whose political landscapes are forever changed through nonviolent protest. Today, the spirit of revolution spreads across the Middle East—with varying results. This spark and catching flame calls the West Virginia Law Review to contemplate the role of law in the occurrence of non‐violence as means of social change and the law’s role in transitioning societies from nonviolent revolution to democracy. This contemplation extends to topics including but not limited to:
- the development and treatment of non-violent resistance groups in the context of totalitarian or oppressive regimes;
- teachers of non-violence as agents of the law working against lawless regimes;
- models for effective transitions and peaceful revolution to democracy, including the role of international law and institutions in such transitions;
- the sources of non-violent revolutions, for example, Gandhi’s teachings;
- non-violent aspects of transitions to democracy in specific countries and regions, such as Egypt, India, Northern Ireland, Russia, Serbia (i.e. Otpor!), South Africa, and Spain; and
- the intersection of non-violent protest, technology (including social networks) and the “right to information.”
The West Virginia Law Review will consider papers from a variety of disciplines, including history, law, philosophy, and political science. Papers may stray from the traditional article format to adequately address the call above.
Abstracts are due by April 15, 2011.mw

The Centre for Comparative and Public Law, University of Hong Kong, presents Recognition and the Politics of Identity and Inclusion in the 21st Century: Managing Diversity in Plural Societies, April 28-29, 2011.
Migration has generated an increasingly borderless world which has challenged the nation-state model as an effective tool for the governance of multiplicities and the management of diversity. As the nation-state is faced with the challenge of dealing with immigrants, non-nationals, refugees and others with newly emerging identities, there is a need to reassess existing frameworks for recognition of the claims of minority communities. The conference seeks to explore the changing dimensions of the politics of identity and inclusion and their implications for governance and the protection of minority communities in plural societies. The conference intends to forge new synergies between disciplines and will draw on the concepts of equality, non-discrimination, identity, inclusion, minority rights and human rights to address the comprehensive challenges posed by life at the margins of society.
For further information and conference registration, please visit: http://www.law.hku.hk/diversity/ or contact Ms. Claire Hussin (diversity.hku@gmail.com). mw
