Call for Personal Stories — Hastening Death by Stopping Eating & Drinking

Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics

Hamline University Health Law Institute Director and Professor Thaddeus Pope is editing a collection of personal stories from individuals who have participated in VSED (voluntarily stopping eating and drinking) to hasten death. The stories will appear in an issue of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics: A Journal of Qualitative Research. Preference will be given to proposals received by Dec. 1, 2015.

VSED is sometimes referred to as VRFF (voluntary refusal of food and fluid) or terminal dehydration. We are interested in the experiences of, among others: (a) individuals who have serious considered VSED as an option; (b) individuals who witnessed or were engaged with a family member’s VSED; and (c) clinicians who were involved with a patient’s deliberations about, or experience with, VSED.

If you are interested in submitting a story, we ask you first to submit a 300-word proposal—a short description of the story you want to tell. Inquiries or proposals should be sent to the editorial office via email: narrativebioethics@gmail.com. We will give preference to story proposals received by Dec. 1, 2015.
